Lake Anna Lake Report – May 2012

Jim Hemby of Lake Anna Striper Guide Service provided the following Fishing
Report for May 2012.  Visit Jim at  www.jimhemby.com or call 540-967-3313.

STRIPERS: Striper fishing has been excellent this year and certainly will only get
better in the month of May. My clients have been catching nice limits of fish topped
off with Craig Rasmusson’s 21 pound Citation Striper which he caught on a
Gizzard Shad. Fresh live bait has been the key to success with most artificial
fisherman catching primarily smaller fish. May is a transition month for the
Stripers, the fish will be converting from feeding in the upper water column early in
the month and in low light conditions of the day to feeding over deeper 25 to 30
foot flats later in the month as the water temperature rises into the 70‘s. Fish are
still scattered all over the lake and we have been having our best success fishing
where there is little fishing pressure away from boat traffic. We are pulling planner
boards rigged with the largest Gizzard shad we can find over flats, points and
humps in water less than 20 feet. When a big Stripers blows a 12 inch Gizzard out
of the water you better be ready to wrestle a hog to the boat. As the water warms to
above 75* the fish will convert to smaller baits and also retreat to deeper flats
where they will school in large numbers. We will use down-lines and put them in
the exact depth we see the schools on our Lowrance to catch up to 40 fish a day.
May is a good month to catch fish on top water on lures like Pencil Poppers,
Redfins , Spooks and chuggars. Hit main lake points early and late in the day for
explosive strikes. Trollers will start to catch more fish as the water warms later in
the month. Swim baits will also catch Stripers this month when fished nearby
schools of bait. To view our catches check out my journal at www.JimHemby.com .

BASS: Bass fishing has also been off the charts this year with some of the largest
stringers of Bass being weighed in at tournaments [Almost 28 pounds for 5 fish!].
The warmer than normal winter has been responsible for the excellent fishing this
year and consequently early spawns. Spawn and post spawn patterns will work
early in the month before the Bass retreat to deeper waters later in the month.
Better fishing will be early in May and slow down as the month progresses. It is
hard to beat top water action this month using your favorite top water lures. Early
in the month sight fishing will still be very good in the clear water. Grass beds at
the Splits and up lake in the North Anna have been producing some great catches.

CRAPPIE: Crappie have spawned and are headed for deeper waters [10 to 20
feet]. Rock ledges, brush piles and bridge pilings will hold catchable fish. Crappie
may not be as easy to catch when they were shallow but once you locate them
they will be schooled in larger numbers. Traditional small jigs tipped with small
tubes and grubs long with small and medium minnows work well. The back of
Christopher Run is holding some nice slabs.

CATFISH: Catfish have feeding all over the lake as well and are being caught at
depths ranging from 8 to 20 feet deep, primarily on live bait. A couple fish in
excess of 30 pounds have already been caught on Shad. The third Dike area is a
great place to catch a HUGE Kitty this month.

CARP: The Carp are rolling in all the grass beds now and bow hunters are
enjoying keeping their skills sharp shooting the big fish. Up lake in both arms of
the lake and basically any larger grass beds are productive. If we get some good
rains and the lake rises fishing will just get better.
Vlly good throughout the year.  In the summer months,
bass congregate at predictable locations near structure.  These areas may  be
fished slowly and methodically.  Deep diving crankbaits and Carolina and Texas
rigged plastics work well.  During the spring and fall, it is important to cover more
water.  The lake is heavily developed.  Flipping and skipping soft plastics around
boat docks is always a good bet – especially for newcomers to the lake – and the
water willow beds in the mid-lake region and North Anna arms are worth a try with
spinnerbaits and weightless plastics.  Uplake (above the “Splits” area where the
North Anna and Pamunkey arms come together) typically has stained water while
the water becomes increasingly clear moving downlake.  The uplake region has
the highest density of bass and crappie.

Striped Bass:  Several hundred thousand fingerling striped bass are stocked each
year.  The striper fishing continues to improve and attract more anglers.  In the
spring and fall, the stripers move uplake where they may be targeted by casting
swim baits (Sassy Shad, Shad Assassin, Storm Lures).  In the summer months,
the fish are most commonly targeted in the mid-lake region using live bait and
trolling deep-diving crankbaits (Cordell Redfins and Norman DD-22s).  Live bait
may be caught using a cast net.  An easier choice is purchasing jumbo minnows
sold by the major marinas on the lake.  Throughout the year, low light conditions
(dawn, dusk, overcast days) are the best times to fish.

Picture is of Viv Balatinez with a large smallmouth bass she caught 4/25/12 while fishing with her husband Ben & Captain Dale. The couple was visisting the states for the first time. The couple lives in Lower Portland, Austraila.

OVERVIEW: Fishing will be good this month. After fish spawn they will gradually start to move into a more consistent feeding pattern. Water temperature will be 60s to the lower 70s.

Largemouth Bass-Fishing will be good. Best lures will be top water lures, Carolina rigs, shaky heads, Texas rigged plastic worms and crank baits. Most largemouth bass will be caught in rocky areas, around stumps and shallow docks. Some largemouth bass will continue to spawn this month. Best depths will be from the 2 to 10 feet deep. Night fishing will improve as the water temperature rises.

Smallmouth Bass- Fishing should be fair. Best areas will be around stumps, rocks, humps and flats. Best lures will be tubes, top water lures, hair jigs and  shaky heads. Best areas will be in the mid to the lower sections of the lake. Most smallmouth bass will spawn in May. Cloudy days and night time is the best times to try your luck.

Striped Bass- Fishing will be good. Stripers will be caught in mostly in the mid to lower areas of the lake.. Best lures will be top water lures, swim baits, buck tails, and Zoom flukes fished with 1/4 to 3/8 oz. lead heads. Live bait will also be productive. The best depths will be from 2 to 25 feet deep. Stripers will start to feed at night as the water temperature rises. Some stripers will surface. Try to find areas with the largest concentrations of baitfish.

Crappie-Fishing for crappie will be good. They will be found 2 to 10 feet deep this month. Best areas will be in the main creeks around deep docks, fallen trees, stumps and brush piles in the mid to upper parts of the lake. Small live minnows and 1 ½ inch tubes fished on 1/16 to 1/8 oz. lead heads will work best to catch crappie this month. Crappie should continue to spawn this month.

TIP OF THE MONTH: Night fishing, while using a black light to help see your line and the shoreline, will be the best time to catch bass and stripers. The baitfish will be spawning at night for the next several weeks. Fish close to the shore with shallow diving lures. The best time is usually between 10 pm. to 2 am. Wear your life jacket and always keep your running lights on.

Lake Anna Fishing Report – March 2012

Fishing Lake Anna in March

March is a month to catch some of the largest fish of the year and many citations should be recorded this month. Although spring officially arrives on March 20th the extremely mild winter has triggered fish to move shallow, feed often and prepare for the spawn. Bait is plentiful and has already begun its migrations up the rivers and into the creeks. We have been catching Stripers for the last month in less than 5 feet of water, Crappie have been plentiful under shallow docks and Bass are cruising the banks. March fishing should be excellent this year.

STRIPERS: Stripers are scattered all over the lake now and are gorging themselves fattening up for the rigors of the spawn which will take place over the next couple months. Due to the warmer than average water temperatures Stripers are literally everywhere from the Dam all the way up the rivers, main lake to the backs of the creeks. Gulls will advertise where schools are working and will give anglers a good place to start fishing. Striper fishing has been excellent, my clients have been limiting out easily and on some days our catch rates have been in excess of 10 fish per hour. [Check out our catches on my journal at www.JimHemby.com] Stripers are fat and full of roe. Here are some proven tactics to catch Stripers this season.

Most anglers are limited to using artificial baits only and rely on Gulls rather than their electronics to locate feeding Stripers. The trick is to approach diving birds quietly turning your big motor off a minimum of 100 yards away and quietly using your trolling motor to sneak up on the feeding Stripers. Anglers should be using their electronics to locate fish well outside of the area the gulls are working due to the abundance of Stripers this year. There is so much bait this year usually the smaller Stripers are chasing the bait to the surface while the larger fish cruise the parameters of the bait schools occasionally feeding on easy bait. Many different baits can be used but throwing spoons either working them nearby the surface or letting them fall and working them all the way back to the boat have been catching nicer fish. Down lake near Dike 3 Pencil Poppers, Spook type baits and Rattletraps work well when the fish surface in the current. Jigs rigged with Super Flukes dropped near the action seem to catch better fish. Mid lake and up lake it is hard to beat throwing swim baits at the banks especially on warming trends. Locate an area where you see bait on your depth finder and target clay or rocky banks for better action. In low light times of the day waking a Redfin over a point nearby bait can bring chills to your spine when a big Striper explodes on your offering.

Artificial techniques work well but nothing fools a big Stripers like pulling a big Shad or Herring past them. If you can’t catch native baits try Jumbo minnows purchased from the marinas. For the next 2 months I will focus on points, humps and shallow flats where baitfish are present and especially where there is minimal boat traffic. Boat motors will turn the fish off and this year I have concentrated on working areas with little or no traffic regardless of the section of the lake with great results. On warming trends I will run Water Bugz planner boards over flats and right up next to the bank whether we are fishing deep main lake portions of the lake or the backs of creeks. On cooling trends and blue bird days if the fish do not cooperate shallow I will drop back to 20 to 30 foot flats and pull a combination of boards and down lines rigged at the depth I see fish on my Lowrance. As the water warms I will use larger baits and when the water cools I will downsize my baits. Being versatile is the key to successfully fishing for Stripers on this lake. Too many anglers fish “Memories” or where they see other boats fishing versus working areas where there is less fishing pressure and bait fish present.

BASS: Warmer than average weather has pushed Bass shallower than normal for this time of year. March is a month of Bass Tournaments on the lake and the fish will see every bait known to man this month. Lake Anna is usually the first stop on most tournament schedules and for a good reason, there are plenty of Big bass that are fatting up for the spawn. Bass are working pre spawn areas [primary and secondary points and various structures nearby spawning flats] feeding heavily in good conditions and retreating back to the first drops or shallower channel edges in when the conditions decline. Many fisherman are using the new multi-rigs [many with different names but basically the same look and appeal] with good results but as the fish move into spawning areas conventional baits should excel with the lack of large school of bait not being nearby. Mid lake and down lake concentrate your efforts in depths of 16 feet or less, working prespawn areas. Primary and secondary points down lake will hold giant Bass that are suckers for Suspending Jerkbaits. A good pattern to try is targeting 30 degree gravel banks that have cover on them with crank baits or swim baits. Other areas that will produce this month will be windy rip rap, throwing big bladed spinner baits on the banks. A few areas that always produce in March and April are coves like Hackneys, Boggs, Dukes Creek and the back of Sturgeon Creek. Backs of mid lake coves and pockets along with docks in deeper Marinas will attract nice bass now. Brush piles, big boulders and any structure should hold Bass that are in transition to spawning areas.

CRAPPIE: Fishing has been and will continue to be excellent for Crappie. Up lake nice fish have been very shallow using shallow docks, dead shoreline grasses and stumps for cover. In cold front conditions Crappie are congregating along bridge pilings and rocky drop offs. We have seen 100 yard schools of Crappie hanging along the first main drop off next to spawning flats in 10 to 20 feet of water. Try locating schools with small jigs and once you find the larger fish work them with medium minnows. We are catching a few Crappie on 6 inch baits pulling boards up on the banks!

CATFISH: The Cats have even been feeding earlier than normal this year. In addition to them being scattered around the numerous bait pods of bait everywhere Huge Blue Cats are up in the current at Dike 3. Last year numerous fish over 20 pounds were caught there in March and already this month a 42 pound fish was boated there.

Fishing Report for Lake Anna 2/9/12

Water temps: mid-lake up into north anna arm- 44-45 in the morning, saw temps at 47-48 in the afternoon
Clarity: Mid-lake 5-7 ft North anna arm 2-3ft

Put in at Anna point with Dad(BigD) again. We targeted steep banks again. We hit alot of new water and some areas that have been good to us before. For those that read my last report you might remember that my father outfished me from the back of the boat. Well, he didnt hold ant punches yesterday either. Throughout the day I threw was he called, “a shmorgishborge of baits”. Meanwhile he stuck with his soft plastic fished very, very slow on a spinning rod with light line. At the end of the day he had two fish to show for it. One was 1.5 and the other a very healthy 3.5 pounder. That was two more bass than I caught all day.

Side note: On our way from one spot to another, we saw some birds diving on bait around the splits. We decided to pull up and try to put some meat in the boat. We both caught a keeper striper within a few casts. We tried a little longer but the fish moved on. It was my biggest Anna striper yet at just over 7 pounds. I caught it on the Andy-rig. I am posting a seperate thread on that.

Fishing report for Kerr/Buggs Island Lake

Fishing report for Kerr/Buggs Island Lake

February 2012

Crappie: Fish are on two different patterns depending oin what part of the lake you are fishing, from Clarksville downstream the fish can still be caught vertical jigging with bucktails around brush and other structures on ledges and points. On the upper end of the lake in creeks such as Bluestone and Buffalo, fishermen are beginning to haul in some nice catches of fish by tightlining jigs and minnows in 5 to 12 feet of water around dropoffs and shallow flats.

Catfish: Blues have been hitting pretty good on the upper end of the lake anywhere above Clarksville, the best method for catching these fish is by anchoring on shallow flats outside of the river channel on the main lake. Fishing on the bottom using cut shad and cut crappie. You never no what to expect fishing like this the next bite you get might be a 5 pounder or it might be a big girl that goes well over 50 pounds.

Striper: Fish are in most of the major creeks feeding on shad, these fish can be caught livebaiting with shad and Jumbo minnows or by casting lures to them. Fishermen are getting good numbers it has just been hard to come by keepers.

Bass: With water tempatures in the mid 40′s to 50 fishing has been good, most fishermen are using shallow running crankbaits, rat-l-traps, jerkbaits and jigs, fish have been holding on red clay banks and rocky pointsin 1 to 8 feet of water. Reports of good numbers of fish and 5 fish bags from 14 to 19 pounds have been coming in.

Happy Fishing! Stop by and see us while you are in town!

Potomac River Fishing Report

Submitted Feb 08, 2012 by Reel Bass Adventures:

“No changes over the past week in patterns or fishing. We are still making good catches of bass along quick dropping shorelines. The grub remains our most productive bait followed by a Norman Deep Baby N. Locate a good ledge with the crank bait and then switch to the grub. Spend time on any area you find bass. If you fish it they will come. A sunny, calm day has been a key for success. The blue cat fishing in the Potomac is drawing a lot of attention. Some days we see more cat fisherman than bass anglers. The cats are being caught along the main river channel with cut gizzard shad on a 8 ought hook with a two ounce sinker on a sliding rig. Big roe yellow perch are starting to show in larger numbers. They can be found in 13 to 16 feet of water. They like a Sting Ray grub or a Berkley drop shot minnow.”

Water Temperature: 44 degrees; Water clarity: 1-2 feet.

January & Feburary Philpott Lake Fishing Report

Bass fishing at Philpott has been great due to the mild weather we received during the months of Nov. Dec and Jan. Water temps were above average for this time of year ; January water temps normally run in the 39*/41* degree mark , this year the water temps never got below 44* and now the water temps have risen to 46* on the main and 48*/49* in some of the creek arms.
Overview for January; Tournaments during this periode produced some great catches with 5 fish limits between 12 lbs and 17lbs. With a largemouth@6+ lbs and a smallmouth@4+ lbs being the largest weighed in during tournament hours. Several largemouth between 3&4 lbs also several 3+ lb smallmouth were weighed in.
Anglers reported catching largemouth bass on several lures and presentations that included; jigs , spoons , spinner-baits, jerk-baits and crankbaits.
Anglers that caught smallmouth bass reported; silverbuddys , hairjigs , grubs and finese jigs. Both largemouth and smallmouth were targeted in depths of 5 ft to 35ft deep. Shad is always a factor..!
Febuary forcast; as the days become longer and water temps start to rise. Bass will start to suspend on points leading into spawning areas. Jerkbaits worked slowly around these areas would be a great starting lure. If no takers on jerkbait , try slow rolling a small bladed spinner-bait on some of the many laydowns Philpott has to offer. Also a shakey-head , dropshot , finese jig and a mini-carolina rig can’t be over looked.
Tip for Febuary fishing; I always have an 3/4oz jigging spoon tied on just in case i go over a school of arcs on the bottom. You never know, them arcs may save the day….  As Always , take care , Ken
